It
seems only right that we should remind you that the long awaited
HAMMER HORROR FRANCHISE COLLECTION from Universal is now available
on Region 1 NTSC dvd.
Reaction
to the set has been somewhat mixed, with most of the complaints
going towards the decision not to include any extras, and some slight
over-matting of the widescreen picture on a couple of the films,
but generally here at the site we've been very impressed. The transfers
are all very nice, the films have never looked this good before.
Colours are superb, images are sharp and sound is generally very
good.
The
films featured cover a range of Hammer subjects from Sangster's
black and white thrillers (Nightmare, Paranoiac)
through classic Hammer (Curse of the Werewolf, Brides
of Dracula, Kiss of the Vampire), the underappreciated
(Evil of Frankenstein, Phantom of the Opera)
and the highly sought after (Captain Clegg in its
US guise of Night Creatures).
We
hope that Universal will take time to revisit the catalogue individually
and provide us with collectors editions, complete with trailers,
stills, interviews, documentaries and correct aspect ratios, but
for the moment, this is indeed a fine set and at US$29 a steal.
If
you haven't already, I recommend purchasing with our international
online affiliate where the set is currently on offer for a bargain
US$20 (CAD$24, UK£11.50). Postage prices are very competitive
(and free for orders of a certain value) and the dvds made their
way across the Atlantic to me in a matter of days.
